Bernice, a veteran from Wide Ruins, was carrying a heavy burden when she first connected with DNP program lead Cassandra, back in June. Her roof was falling apart, and every day she worried about how long her home would keep protecting her and her daughter. With limited income, the repairs felt out of reach, leaving her with an overwhelming sense of uncertainty.
Cassandra knew Bernice couldn’t face this challenge alone. She reached out to Walton Yazzie, Project Manager for the Arizona Department of Housing, who had recently begun working with DNP to expand support for veterans in need. Walton visited Bernice’s home, took photos of the damaged roof, and assured her that steps were being taken. For Bernice, that first visit meant more than just paperwork, it was the first glimmer of hope that her home could be safe again.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
Soon after, Walton connected with Rocket Builders out of Tuba City, AZ, who agreed to take on the repair. To Bernice’s astonishment, the crew arrived and completed the entire roofing project in just one day. She no longer had to lie awake listening for leaks or fearing the next storm. Instead, she and her daughter could finally breathe easy, knowing their home was sound.
When Bernice called Cassandra and Karen to share the news, her joy was unmistakable. The gratitude in her voice said it all. This wasn’t just about a roof; it was about dignity, comfort, and the peace of mind that every veteran and family deserves.
Thanks to the Arizona Department of Housing, Rocket Builders, and the collaborative spirit of everyone involved, Bernice and her daughter have their safe haven back.
