A Warm Solution: Supporting a Veteran’s Winter Preparation

The fear of harsh winter conditions without resources can make anyone anxious and alone. But for one veteran, that fear was quickly replaced with hope, thanks to a team of dedicated individuals ready to act when it mattered most.

As winter approached, Army veteran Joe Atakai needed a vital resource—wood—to heat his home in the cold months ahead. With limited options and time running out, Joe sought assistance to prepare for the season. Fortunately, he was referred to the Diné Naazbaa Partnership (DNP) by a Community Health Representative (CHR) at the Navajo Nation Department of Health who had heard about DNP through Facebook.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.

Understanding the urgency, DNP Case Coordinator Karen Shirley quickly contacted the Adopt-A-Native-Elder (ANE) program, knowing they could offer the proper support. Joe received his wood voucher within a week, bringing him relief and gratitude.

Joe was overjoyed by how swiftly his community rallied around him, and the CHR expressed her appreciation for DNP’s connections. Thanks to the partnership, another veteran could receive the same assistance, ensuring that both families were better prepared for the cold.A Warm Solution: Supporting a Veteran’s Winter Preparation
