A solid support system, small or large, can make a vital difference for someone struggling. Army veteran Jimmy Bigthumb-Smith lived through unimaginable hardships, but it was the selfless act of a friend that brought him to resources and support through Diné Naazbaa Partnership (DNP).
After years on the streets of Phoenix, Jimmy returned to Kayenta, AZ, where he lived in a truck camper outside his late mother's uninhabitable home. With no water, electricity, or septic services and his vision failing rapidly, Jimmy's situation was dire. This was when a concerned veteran friend, James, contacted DNP on Jimmy's behalf.
Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
DNP Case Coordinator Karen Shirley immediately stepped in, visiting Jimmy to update his information and learn more about his struggles. Karen contacted several organizations, including the VA Native American Rural Healthcare team, Nation's Finest, and Navajo Nation Western Agency, to address Jimmy's needs.
Western Agency helped Jimmy apply for housing while Karen assisted with completing and submitting his paperwork. Nations Finest provided immediate relief, covering his hotel stay and keeping him warm. They also offered to purchase Jimmy new furniture to make his future apartment feel like home. Though this process took time, plans were set in motion for Jimmy's transition to Flagstaff, AZ. There, Jimmy would have access to medical care and other necessities.
At the end of October, a VA rep requested Karen to join them to finalize Jimmy's intake and applications. By November 6, Jimmy arrived in Flagstaff, thrilled with the progress and support he received. Seeing the happiness on his face was unforgettable—a powerful reminder of what compassion and collaboration can achieve. Jimmy's journey isn't over, but thanks to DNP, the VA, and Nation's Finest, he now has hope for a brighter future. Karen and the DNP team will continue to support Jimmy, ensuring he receives the care and resources needed to live a stable and happy life.
