Winter in the Navajo Nation can be especially harsh with freezing temperatures. Many families live in rural areas where homes rely on wood-burning stoves for heat, and access to resources like firewood, electricity, or propane can be limited. During the cold months, it is the elderly and children who are the most vulnerable.
Rhonda, a Marine veteran, was referred to Dine Naazbaa Partnership (DNP) by her local VA in January after she inquired about finding firewood for her home. Rhonda is the caregiver for her grandmother and young nephew, but she does not have the means to chop or haul her own firewood, leaving her with only one option: she must find a resource willing to donate and deliver a supply of wood to her home.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
Karen, DNP’s veteran support advocate, acted quickly by reaching out to her contacts in the community and was able to get Rhonda a load delivered that same day. Just a few weeks later, Karen called to check up on Rhonda after more predictions of extreme cold, and organized a second load of wood to be dropped off for her.
Rhonda expressed deep gratitude, sharing how thankful she was for the swift support and reiterated the importance of advocacy, partnership, and compassion that Dine Naazbaa Partnership brings to the Navajo veteran community.
